Driving the Revenue Engine…To the Netherlands

PK and I found ourselves at Jaarbeurs Utrecht in the Netherlands last week, attending Webwinkel Vakdagen, the biggest e-commerce event in the Benelux. There were some great lectures and workshops with themes covering marketing, software & development, legal & finance, logistics & distribution and social media & m-commerce.

Apart from being a great excuse for a jolly and to catch up with some familiar faces from the digital community, I was also pitching up as a key-note speaker, presenting a talk that is always guaranteed to draw the crowds, ‘The Revenue Engine’.

In a report presented to the Government towards the end of last year, Mary Portas laid out a series of recommendations to revitalise the High Street and, at the same time, identified the villains that were the cause of this once all-embracing, key community focal point’s demise. High on her list was the out of town retail locations but I would challenge this and place on-line retail as the conquering force with blood on its hands.

The growing trend to buy on-line is fast becoming the norm. Non-food on-line sales have 14 per cent of the market today but are forecast to jump to 34 per cent by 2020, according to research from retail consultancy, Javelin.  Sole internet players who have no bricks and mortar shops like Asos and Amazon are expected to double their share of the total market in the coming years whilst the number of chain stores in town centres are expected to fall by as much as approximately 30 per cent in the same period

An Affaire to Remember

From fuel products to the finest lingerie, both Drupal 7 and Livelink have exerted their powers of flexibility in recent months with two of the most progressive e-commerce sites to-date.

Last week we launched frenchaffaires.co.uk for on-line lingerie retailer, French Affaires. The website is built on Drupal 7, using Drupal Commerce, which is fast-emerging as the best way to build e-commerce sites and certainly the most capable when handling complex product attributes.

Perils of Groupon

Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE

Pity the poor woman who recently faced financial ruin after 8,500 buyers took up her 75 per cent discount offer on a box of 12 cupcakes on money-saving website, Groupon.

Having under-estimated the popularity of the deal, Rachel Brown found herself losing up to £3 on each batch of cakes sold and having to pay out £12,500 for the extra costs of hiring agency staff and sending the products out, wiping out her profits for the year. There’s a lesson to all on-line retailers there – know your limitations and make sure you get the proposition right !

Are you all set for Cyber Monday? 5th December 2011

few years ago, around the time that it became irrefutable that on-line shopping was a credible and  serious alternative to pushing and shoving through the crowds of High Street Christmas shoppers, the term ‘Cyber Monday’ was coined. Used to describe the day in the run up to Christmas when on-line shopping peaks, it has been adopted by on-line retailers and shoppers to denote the day when the best on-line deals are available and seasonal offers are therefore rife.

Last year, Monday 8th December was designated Cyber Monday and it was estimated that we spent approximately £350 million in that one day on-line demonstrating the recognised peak in Christmas sales.
